Driving Something Different

Renting a Race Car

It's not like exactly like renting a car on vacation (but it kinda is). Drivers decide to rent a car like this for a number of different reasons:

  1. You’re a licensed racer in Spec E30 and your own car is being worked on.
  2. You’re a licensed racer in Spec E30 with your own car and you’d like to hire a coach and provide him/her with another SE30 for “lead-follow” exercises
  3. You’re a racer in a high HP series and wish to work with a coach in a momentum car
  4. You’re an experienced HPDE driver and wish to try out an SE30 before committing to the platform
  5. You’re a licensed racer in another class and want to give a Spec E30 a whirl
  6. You’re a track day veteran and want to try out what a purpose-built race car feels like
  7. You’d like to do track days, but would prefer not to risk your dream car or daily driver

Because of this, it is challenging to identify a set price for a specific amount of track time. We’d prefer to have a conversation about what you’re looking to get out of the experience so that a custom plan can be developed. From there a price will be identified based on factors such as:

  1. How the car(s) will be used on track (W2W racing? Track Day fun? Professional coaching on a rented track?)
  2. Where the car(s) will be used
  3. How much time the car(s) will be on track
  4. How the client would like the cars set up
  5. Consumables like fuel, tires, brake pads and the like
  6. The type and amount of at-track support desired

So, contact us and let's talk about it!

The Cars

Combustion Club maintains three BMW E30 series cars set up for Spec E30 racing with NASA. Spec E30 cars are required to run under a set of specifications/rules that aim to provide racers with economical (as far as racing can be economical) and yet exciting action. All cars are built with safety in mind, roll cages, Lifeline fire systems, OMP or Racetech hard back seats, Schroth 6-point harnesses are installed. All three cars Have passed NASA 2023 inspections to be on track and are equipped with:

  1. Radio set-ups for communications with spotters or coaches in the stands or in a lead/follow car
  2. Garmin Catalyst timing/video systems
  3. 5spd Manual transmissions (Getrag 260)
  4. Coil over suspensions from Ground Control per SE30 rules
  5. Forward facing, rollbar mounted GoPro housings
  6. CoolShirt driver comfort systems
  7. Quick release Momo or OMP steering wheels

These are “momentum” cars that reward driver skill in braking, cornering and maintenance of speed through corners. In talented hands, at Track Days, they often have drivers of higher horsepower cars wondering how they keep up (or leave them behind). They are excellent platforms to learn to go fast without a ton of horsepower and provide experience that benefits the driver as s/he moves to (or back to) more powerful platforms.

The cars are a Convertible with a fiberglass top, a Sedan and a Coupe. All are 5-speed manuals. Each has its own set up as identified below.

Convertible #92 (Veronica). Veronica was built up in 2022 to run in the NASA National Championships at Laguna Seca and has the most aggressive suspension set up of the three cars with respect to wheel camber. She is an excellent choice as a lead/follow experience or W2W racer.

Sedan #65 (Mallory). Mallory was built in 2017 and was on track very little in the ensuing years, primarily in TT. She has a passenger seat with a 6-point harness. She is also equipped with an AIM dashboard and SmartyCam data logger. Sensors include steering angle, brake pedal pressure and throttle position. She is an excellent choice for a single car coaching experience where the coach can set representative laps and the student can then work to mimic the coach’s inputs.

Coupe #7 (Marilyn). Marilyn was built by a BMW shop owner out West well-known for his attention to detail as his personal racer. The did not end up racing her nor was she raced through subsequent ownership. She is an excellent choice for track days and coaching or for photo opportunities. She also has a passenger seat with a 6-point harness.
